What does the O and I mean on a switch

It is the IEC 5009 symbol and one of the many power buttons. That represent sleep mode or low battery state. It is also known as "the stand by button".until 2004, when it was replaced by a crescent moon. It is most confusing due to the binary numbers representation 0 and 1.

The common mean of 0 and 1 is either switch is ON or OFF.

In some cases, the button actually causes the micro to get the powered up when pressed. Which turns then some transistors to keep the power on. When we press the button to turn the device OFF, the micro-processor shut down everything including itself.
